Winter Palace

With the opening of the Luxor Hotel in 1886/7 the nobility of Europe arrived at Luxor to visit the nearby Valley of the Kings. 20 years later the Winter Palace - under the same management company - was opened.
"One is immediately struck by the Victorian flavour of the place." a visitor is reported to have said.
Over the years it has played host to leading politicians, actors and writers on a regular basis. In fact, the ultimate privilege - so it was said - was to have had one's own yacht moored along the quayside, opposite the Winter Palace.(see: History)

HISTORY IN BRIEF:

1907: The hotel opened, built in typical British colonial style. The hotel soon became famous for its New Year Eve celebrations with its masked and costumed balls.

1922: It was on the notice board at Winter Palace that Howard Carter first announced the discovery of the tomb of Tutankamon. The great Egyptologist was a regular guest here. He frequented The Old Winter Palace until his death and could often be spotted in self imposed isolation in the hotel's garden.
