Palace Praha
Opened in 1909 and designed in a rich Viennese art nouveau style, the Praha Palace has catered to the movers and shakers of politics, the arts and entertainment since its golden days in the first half of the last century.
The hotel was opened on 21 April in 1909. The design was the work of František Buldra - a Prague builder and the owner of the hotel, together with architect George Justich. In 1924 the new owner Emanuel Oppel turned the facility into a competitive 5-star hotel. Soon after, the Palace Hotel became a center of Prague’s social and cultural life. ?Josephine Baker was one of the hotel's first prominent guests. Even the great opera voice Emma Destinová and her professional partner Enrico Caruso dwelled here on several occasions. Two of the function rooms were named after them. Hotel Palace Praha's first era of long duration came to an end when it was closed on 1 January 1986.
After a months-long battle, the idea of a "sensitive" renovation won and, the Palace Hotel was saved. Its original character has been preserved thanks to the "house-in-a-house" renovation approach, i.e. leaving the outer walling untouched. ?The hotel reopened in 1989, and has been providing top-class service ever since, making many a world’s celebrity feel at home once again. The last renovation of the Hotel Palace Praha was during the years 2006 and 2007.
1909, April 21:
The Palace Hotel Prague opens its doors in grand Viennese Art Nouveau style. It is the creation of Prague builder František Buldra, in collaboration with architect George Justich. The hotel rises on medieval foundations and quickly becomes a showpiece of early 20th-century elegance.
1924:
Emanuel Oppel purchases the hotel and transforms it into one of the finest establishments in the city. With elegance, service, and prime location, the Palace becomes a magnet for high society, artists, and dignitaries. Several event rooms are named in honor of the hotel’s famous residents, including opera legend Emma Destinová and tenor Enrico Caruso.
1986, January 1:
The hotel closes to begin a full renovation. In a remarkable act of preservation, the structure is modernized using a 'house within a house' concept—retaining its historical façade and shell while completely refurbishing the interior.
1989:
The hotel reopens after three years of careful restoration, with its distinctive Art Nouveau features fully revived and preserved.
2000:
A new renovation campaign updates the hotel’s infrastructure while respecting its heritage.
2010–2015:
Targeted modernizations are carried out, primarily in guest rooms and building infrastructure. The aim is to retain original Art Nouveau features—such as wood paneling, leaded glass, and marble surfaces—while discreetly upgrading facilities to contemporary standards. Renovation work respects the hotel's original architectural vision from 1909.
2016–2019:
The hotel intensifies its collaboration with heritage preservation authorities. Key interventions include the restoration of façade details and the conservation of the hotel’s original lift systems, which date back to the early 20th century.
2020–2022:
Amid the global pandemic, operations are temporarily scaled back. The hotel uses this period to digitize internal systems and upgrade fire safety infrastructure. Original furnishings and decorative elements are catalogued and, where necessary, carefully restored.
2023–2025:
The Palace continues its quiet dedication to tradition. Emphasis is placed on reinterpreting the hotel’s Art Nouveau identity for the 21st century—not through spectacle, but through careful stewardship of its architectural and cultural legacy. The hotel today stands not only as a place of accommodation, but as a living chapter of Prague’s urban history.
