The hotel provides the public with little information about its history. Our team researches the hotel's past, from the very beginning, verifying its exact opening date and providing an overview of its history up to the present day.?If you have any useful information and would like to share it, please send it to archives@famoushotels.org.?Thank you This is what we know so far (attention: unverified history!): Queen of the Gulf offers magnificent architecture combined with the natural beauty of an oceanside setting. Named after Bernardo de Galvez, the Spanish colonial governor who first chartered the Texas Gulf Coast, the Hotel Galvez was constructed in 1911 and flourished as a hot spot during the Jazz Age and the Big Band Era. Over the years, guests have included General Douglas MacArthur and presidents Franklin Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, and Lyndon Johnson. Just as each of these men served the country in various capacities in World War II, the hotel also had wartime duty, operating as a U.S. Coast Guard training facility. Steeped in historical significance and reborn through a multi-million dollar renovation, the Hotel Galvez offers the charm and elegance of Galveston's Victorian heritage.
