The Dell Aquila Palace was the guest house of the Scaligeri family, Lords of Verona, presenting a tradition of hospitality that goes back to the 14th century. In 1674 the palace became an inn, hosting famous guests such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart /1756-1791) and Wolfgang Goethe (1749-1832). It was also the location of the signing of the treaty of Villafranca, between Napoleon III, Vittorio Emanuele II and Archduke Ranieri and Radetzky (1859), an agreement between France and Austria. After the battles of MAGENTA and SOLFERINO, NAPOLEON III and FRANCIS JOSEPH met at Villafranca, where the Austrians agreed to an armistice. Austria handed Lombardy over to France, who later passed it to Sardinia (Piedmont) but retained Venetia. The rulers of the central Italian duchies were restored. Piedmont acquiesced and CAVOUR resigned. In 1882 the inn was converted into the Grand Hotel Imperiale Aux Deux Tours. In 1900 it was listed as GRAND HOTEL DE LONDRES & ROYAL DEUX TOURS, today it is known by this name, in short Due Torri, "Two Towers". The huge restyling concluded at the end of June 2006 further enhanced this charming hotel with a refurbished bride façade, a more impressive lobby with contemporary touches, and a brand new fine dining area.
