Connaught

Perhaps the most quintessentially English of London's premier hotels, The Connaught has now reopened after a multi-million pound renovation programme.
How the Stage was Set HISTORY IN BRIEF 1897: The hotel opened as The Coburg. It would only assume the name ‘Connaught’ during World War I. 2007: The hotel shuts for a major revamp. HISTORY IN DETAIL 1803: Alexander Grillon opened a hotel in Albemarle Street, Mayfair. Some years later, an offshoot of the hotel was opened in a pair of Georgian houses in Charles Street, off Grosvenor Square. The hotel was owned by Auguste Scorrier and when the Duke of Westminster decided to redevelop the area, the street was completely altered, becoming Carlos Place. 1892: Scorrier applied for permission to rebuild the hotel and, a couple of years later, the original houses were demolished and rebuilding work began. 1897: The Coburg Hotel duly opened, named after Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg. 1917: It was re-named The Connaught during the Great War. The name chosen was that of Queen Victoria's 3rd son, Prince Arthur, the first Duke of Connaught. 1935: Rudolph Richard, a young Swiss hotelier, became general manager of The Connaught. Richard worked hard to create the ambience for which the hotel is still known today, running it almost as an English private house, with the highest standards of comfort and service. 1956: The Connaught was acquired by The Savoy Group, owners of Claridge's, The Berkeley and The Savoy in London. 2007, 27 March: The Connaught closes for a restoration, which will culminate in the addition of 33 guest rooms and suites and a state-of-the-art spa. 2008: April; the hotel reopens - We are currently updating this information -
