Parkhotel Adler
This romantic 5-star hotel is set next to the Baroque church in the Black Forest town of Hinterzarten, right at the foot of the world-famous Adlerschanze ski jump.
The Parkhotel Adler Hinterzarten has been under the care of one family since 1446.
Its evolution from a modest farming estate to a modern hotel mirrors the unfolding of European history.
The establishment’s narrative is marked by war, royal journeys, and continual adaptation to changing times.
In 1446, early records reveal the name of Hans Bilstein in tax documents.
He acquired the Zartenhof through various assets, laying the foundation of the estate.
Originally, the Adler was a substantial farm with 80 hectares of woodland and fields.
A farmers’ pub stood adjacent to the church of Maria in Zarten, noted as far back as the 12th century.
Until 1870, the estate belonged to Austria, as affirmed by the old pub sign.
The Thirty Years’ War wrought significant change when the Adler was burned down in 1638.
Rebuilt the following year, the structure from 1639 endures to this day.
Historical milestones continued to shape its legacy.
In 1770, the route for Marie Antoinette’s journey from Vienna to Paris was constructed through the Höllental, and she is believed to have stayed at the Adler, then serving as a post station.
Similarly, in 1810, Marie Louise’s passage from Paris to Vienna saw her visit this important waystation.
Over time, the hotel’s appearance has evolved through additions and renovations.
In 1904, a Main House complemented the original Schwarzwaldhaus from 1639, marking a significant architectural development.
The expansion continued in 1978 with the addition of the Residenz, which provided spacious conference rooms and refined suites.
A further enhancement came in 1999 with the opening of a Wellness Pavilion, offering a pool, sauna, steam room, and other amenities for relaxation.
