The jury has confirmed the selection of these hotels. We are now starting to establish the history of these hotels (the rules are simple: over 50 years old, over 50 rooms, over 50% of the year open ... and famous).

Austria, Fuschl: Schloss Fuschl (1958)

This beautiful castle at the lake Fuschl became famous as backdrop for Schloss Possenhofen in the legendary “Sissi” movies starring Romy Schneider. The recent renovations have transformed it into a splendid hotel with great charm and a perfect location.  > go to

Belgium, Brussels: Amigo (1957)

The Amigo's building was first mentioned in the town's records in 1522 when the city council bought it from a wealthy merchant family in order to turn it into a prison. The Spanish rulers at the time mistook its Flemish name and translated this into their language as Amigo. The name has stayed with the house and the surrounding area ever since. After serving various purposes over the following centuries the building was transformed into a hotel in 1957. > go to

Egypt, Cairo:  The Nile (1959)

The Nile had opened in 1959 as the first American hotel in Egypt. Flying under the flag of Hilton, "Conrad Hilton's 'Jewel on the Nile' opened with great fanfare and a cast of several Hollywood celebrities and journalists ..." In 2009 the hotel changed management, it is now operated by Ritz Carlton. The historical impact of this hotel on the society of modern Egypt is enormous and will be subject of a study which we will publish in the near future. > go to

France, Paris: Regina (1900)

Kenya, Nanyuki: Mount Kenya Safari Club (1959)

Founded in 1959 by the late film star William Holden, eccentric American Ray Ryan, and Swiss financier Carl Hirschmann, it has been a Mecca for the international jet set - its list of members reads like a Who's Who of royalty, aristocracy, and the rich and famous. The Club's history is as colourful and exciting as its members and visitors - from the pioneers who made the homestead and the farm their own, through its conversion into an upcountry hotel, to the uproarious narrative of the three-hell raisers who bought it on a whim and launched a legend.  > go to
