Stockyards

The hotel provides the public with little information about its history. Our team researches the hotel's past, from the very beginning, verifying its exact opening date and providing an overview of its history up to the present day.?If you have any useful information and would like to share it, please send it to archives@famoushotels.org.?Thank you This is what we know so far (attention: unverified history!): Erected by Colonel William Thannisch at the corner of Main and Exchange Streets in 1907, the hotel was often home in its early days to cattle barons and their families as well as traveling cowboys, merchants and foreign dignitaries. Later known as the Chandler Hotel and the Plaza Hotel, the property served as a popular hang-out for cowboys and ranchers. Rooms were inexpensive, and each floor offered bathrooms shared by occupants. In 1984, the hotel was completely renovated by then-owners Tom Yater and Marshall Young. Young and Yater created the 52-room layout of suites and sleeping rooms still in use today. Purchased by BFX Hospitality Group in 1996, the Stockyards Hotel once again underwent another extensive two year renovation to create the quietly elegant, well-appointed ambiance enjoyed by travelers from around the world. All sleeping rooms are uniquely fashioned in one of four period decors: Victorian, Mountain Man, Cowboy or Native American. While hiding out from the law in 1933, an infamous pair of bank robbers took cover in what is now Room 305. Today guests staying in the Bonnie and Clyde suite enjoy all the amenities of an upscale hotel as well as some unusual decorative touches, including a pistol owned by Bonnie Parker. The three-story Stockyards Hotel was built in 1906-07 by Col. Thomas Marion Thannisch (1853-1935), one of North Fort Worth’s early developers. Native American, cowboy, mountain man, and Victorian motifs and décor set the tone for the authentically furnished and restored guest rooms, and the first floor Celebrity Suite, with its own patio and jacuzzi, has been a popular place for country-western stars to hang their hats when in town. The hotel is the cornerstone of the Stockyards Historic District, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. (52 rooms and suites)
