History Le Richemond Present Le Richemond

Le Richemond

On 6 February 2023: Jumeirah Group, the global luxury hospitality company and member of Dubai Holding, announced the acquisition of its first property in Switzerland as it continues its growth trajectory and international expansion. The flagship property - Le Richemond - was founded in 1875 and is located on the banks of Lake Geneva in a prime location at the heart of the city’s business district and a short walk from the city’s luxury designer boutiques. The acquisition forms part of the Group’s strategy to build its brand profile in gateway destinations across the world.

Le Richemond was closed for extensive renovation and refurbishment. It re-opened in September 2007. It went thorugh many hands, recently the Dorcheste Collection, before it was acquired by Rocco Forte Hotels. It closed again in 2020 due to Corona.

This five star hotel has held its prime position facing the famous Brunswick Monument and Gardens (picture) and overlooking the Alps, Lake Geneva, and the Old Town Cathedral since 1875. Just 6km from Geneva Airport and with the business and shopping districts of this sophisticated city only walking distance away, it is ideally located for business meetings and conferences. Three meeting rooms, all with natural daylight and the ballroom, which accommodate parties of 10 to 200, make it the ideal choice for events of all kinds.

Adolphe-Rodolphe Armleder, the son of a German maker of oak wine barrels, first opened Riche-Mont in 1875 as a guesthouse with 25 rooms. In fact, Adolphe-Rodolphe Armleder rented the pension Le Riche-Mont in 1875 from the late Geneva painter Francoise Diday.

Armleder took a hands-on approach when renovating the structure to maintain cost efficiency all while building a client list. The building was transformed from a modest structure to a well known hotel throughout Switzerland.

Mr Armleder acquired several proprties and headed several groups. As Founder of the Swiss Hotel Association and of the famous Hotel School in Lausanne, he became president of the Geneva Hotel Association and a member of the city council. In WW II, Jean Armleder assumed control of the hotel, renovating and expanding the hotel.

The hotel was passed from father to son for four generations. Financial difficulties prompted the Armleder family to sell the declining hotel in the 1990s. The Rocco Forte Collection acquired the hotel in 2005 and closed the hotel for renovations until 2007. The renovation project expanded the hotel to 109 rooms with 26 suites, the addition of a seventh floor for the Armleder suite, an Art Deco and eclectic design, and the addition of restaurants, Sapori and Le Cottage Bar and restaurant as well as Le Bar, cocktail bar. Meeting rooms, a ballroom, an on site day spa treatment facility and a fitness center were also added. Le Richemond joined the Dorchester Collection in 2011. Renovations to bring the unique design elements of Dorchester hotels were implemented in the restaurants and bar areas as well as hotel suites. In March 2015, Le Richemond Hotel was host to the University of Essex's Human Rights Centre's 50th anniversary. The former President of Slovenia, Dr. Danilo Türk, gave the keynote.
