Menger

Dubbed "The finest Hotel west of the Mississippi" we introduce the Menger Hotel, the oldest continuously operating hotel west of the Mississippi. Just steps from "The Alamo" (The Alamo Mission in San Antonio is commonly called The Alamo and was originally known as Misión San Antonio de Valero. It was founded in the 18th century as a Roman Catholic mission and fortress compound, and today is part of the San Antonio Missions World Heritage Site in San Antonio, Texas, United States. It was the site of the Battle of the Alamo in 1836, and is now a museum in the Alamo Plaza Historic District.)

The hotel offers a smart guide to explore its history and the building. It also offers online apps as download from its website.

The original Menger Hotel, since enlarged, was built on the site of Menger´s Brewery, the first in Texas.

"The finest Hotel west of the Mississippi" was host to notables such as Sam Houston, Generals Lee and Grant, and Presidents Taft and Mc Kinley. Teddy Roosevelt recruited the Rough Riders in the Menger Bar. The oldest continually operating hotel west of the Mississippi.

The Menger Hotel was constructed in 1859 under the direction of owner William A. Menger and architect John Fries. The original two-story building (pictured) occupies a prominent location in downtown San Antonio, only 100 yards from the site of the Alamo. It is the Menger that has housed personalities such as Theodore Roosevelt (pictured), Sidney Lanier, Babe Ruth, Mae West, Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant, Sarah Bernhardt, and Gutzon Borglum, just to name a few. More than 130 years of refinements have created a masterpiece of traditional elegance and atmosphere at the Menger.

The hotel now boasts five stories and 316 rooms. Although much of the architecture, history, appointments, and artifacts found at the Menger Hotel certainly qualify as museum-quality, it remains a public hotel.
