The exception confirms the rule: here we are glad to make one - The Monterosa doesn't meet the number of 50 rooms to be part of our organization but the jury agreed: "A hotel opened by Swiss hopitality pioneer Alexander Seiler in 1855 can not be ignored: The original Seiler Hotel is erected on the foundations of the legendary «Lauber Inn», which established Zermatt’s hotel keeping in 1839 (later Hotel Riffelberg andl Cervin). Seiler extended it in 1855 and renamed it the Hotel Monte Rosa. This was the beginning of the Seiler family’s hotel and catering business. In 1855 Alexander Seiler opened the Hotel Monte Rosa here, in the centre of the village. Since over one and a half centuries the most traditional hotel of Zermatt accommodates visitors from around the world. The membership with «Great Hotels of the World» vouches for the high quality of services. Experience the charm of the alpine «Belle-Époque» hotel and at the same time enjoy the comforts of a modern hotel infrastructure.

Our team researches the hotel's past, from the very beginning, verifying its exact opening date and providing an overview of its history up to the present day.?If you have any useful information and would like to share it, please send it to archives@famoushotels.org.?Thank you This is what we know so far (attention: unverified history!): Steeped in tradition, the Hotel Monte Rosa was the first hotel in the Matterhorn village. Opened in 1839 by the local doctor, it was at that time the only village inn and boasted three rooms. The Hotel was taken over by the Seiler family in 1853. Its guests include Edward Whymper, the first conqueror of the Matterhorn, and numerous other mountaineers. Over the years the hotel has been extended and refurbished on several occasions. It was recently upgraded to meet the demanding standards currently expected of an international hotel, yet without losing the homely ambiance and charm of a traditional turn-of-the-century alpine hotel. This is reflected in the various lounges and salons, the historical dining room, one of the most beautiful in the Alps, the billiard room and the Montrose Bar.

Precious like alpine flowers The Hotel Monte Rosa disposes of the comfort of a modern first class hotel with 8 single, 12 standard, 20 superior and 3 deluxe rooms, as well as 4 suites. The comfort of the rooms corresponds to the high standards of a four star hotel. Edelweiss Our deluxe rooms offer a comfortable bedroom with a sitting room corner and a couch, with a view towards the Rothorn and the Mischabel group of mountains. Enzian Some of the superior rooms dispose of a balcony and Matterhorn view, some a view to the Rothorn and the Mischabel group of mountains. Alpenrose The standard rooms are all situated at the back of the hotel; they are very quiet, but without a view. Silberdistel Half of these rooms boast a balcony and a view to the Matterhorn, the other half are without balcony and with a view of the Rothorn and the Mischabel group of mountains.
The suites are all named after our famous mountains: Monte Rosa, Matterhorn, Breithorn and Pollux. All have been renovated recently and fulfil the standards of the leading four star hotels of Zermatt. 3 of the 4 suites offer a fantastic view of the Matterhorn besides boasting a balcony.

The Monte Rosa is the first and oldest Hotel of the Village. First records date back to 1839 with three rooms... The most trditional hotel of our village also boasts a very soecial dining room with stucco ceiling for table d´Hote and a la carte dining.
